| 26 January is a Day of Mourning, an Invasion Day and a Survival Day. It is a reminder that for over 80,000 years First Nations peoples have cared for Country which has provided plentiful resources, a place to live, a place to rest and a place to heal. It is a day First Nations peoples stand in solidarity, with their community of allies, to raise awareness through protest, that they have not been afforded the same human rights as most Australians. They seek self-determination, representation and wellbeing. It is a day First Nations peoples protest past and present government legislation and policies that have been harmful and continue to harm First Nations peoples, families and children. While the majority of bureaucratic power may rest with the government, First Nations peoples hold their cultural sovereignty and community authority. 26 January is a day First Nations peoples call on all Australians to commemorate the past atrocities, reflect on our relationships and call out systemic racism. It is also a day that First Nations peoples stand strong and proud of their cultural identity and their responsibilities as Traditional Custodians – many choosing this day to share culture and educate. |
